    What letters are vowels?

    In English, the standard vowels are A, E, I, O, U. Sometimes Y acts like a vowel, depending on the word. This tool focuses on the core set (it counts AEIOU in text) so results are more universally useful.

    A • E • I • O • U Optional Y

    What is a diphthong?

    A diphthong is a two-part vowel sound blended into one syllable, like “coin,” “loud,” or “time.” Our vowel finder counts the letters, not the sounds, so a diphthong still contributes the number of vowel letters it contains. Essentially, the vowel counter counts each individual vowel letter, ie. ‘A’ ‘E’ ‘I’ ‘O’ U’, regardless of if they appear in a diphthong or not.

    Find vowels in a string (for coding)

    Here’s a tiny, readable pattern you can adapt in most languages to find vowels in string data:

    // JavaScript
    const countVowels = s => (s.match(/[aeiou]/gi) || []).length;

    // Python
    # def count_vowels(s): return len(re.findall(r"[aeiou]", s, re.I))

    // Java
    // int count = Pattern.compile("[aeiou]", Pattern.CASE_INSENSITIVE).matcher(s).results().count();

    Alternatively, paste your code or string into our tool to have it scanned for vowels.
